Threads launches direct messaging feature globally

Threads has launched the direct messaging feature globally for Android, iOS and web. Users will be able to message their followers and their mutual connections on Instagram directly.

The feature will be available to users over 18 years and be restricted to chats between two people.

The platform said they will be expanding the feature to people who aren’t just Threads and Instagram followers. They are also working on a group messaging feature, inbox filters and other messaging controls.

For now, Threads DMs will have preset emojis, report spam feature and the option to mute DMs. Users will also be able to check their message requests in a separate folder.

However, muting and blocking a follower or mutual connection will also mute and block them on Instagram.

A Threads spokesperson also told The Verge that while the platform DMs will be “protected by robust privacy standards, account protections and safety infrastructure,” they do not support end-to-end encryption.

The DMs feature will be available in most markets where Threads is except for Japan, Australia, the U.K. and the EU.

There’s also a new highlighter feature that was announced that will emphasise certain conversations for users in their feed including trending topics.
